Tattoo Aftercare in Bali’s Sun, Sea and Heat

Nusa Dua’s beaches, pools and humidity are the biggest risk to a healing tattoo — here’s how to protect it.

The essentials

Sun, sea, pool and sweat

Sun

Can I go in the sun with a new tattoo?

Keep it covered or in the shade for at least two weeks.

Direct sun on healing skin can burn it, slow healing, and fade fresh ink permanently. Loose, breathable clothing over the tattoo works better than sunscreen while it's still open. Once it's fully healed, always use SPF 30+ over it to keep the colour sharp.

Sea

Can I swim in the sea with a fresh tattoo?

No — stay out of the ocean for at least two weeks.

Salt water, sand and the bacteria in seawater can irritate an open tattoo and raise the risk of infection. Bali's beaches will still be there once your tattoo has closed over — plan the swim for later in your trip.

Pool & chlorine

Can I use the pool with a new tattoo?

Avoid chlorinated pools for at least two weeks.

Chlorine dries out healing skin and can irritate the wound. A hotel pool is tempting in Nusa Dua's heat, but a fresh tattoo and chlorine don't mix — wait until the skin has fully closed over.

Sweat & humidity

Does Bali's heat and humidity affect healing?

Yes — keep the area clean and dry, and avoid heavy sweating for the first few days.

Trapped sweat and moisture under a dressing encourages bacteria. In Nusa Dua's climate that means light, breathable clothing over the tattoo, air conditioning where you can get it, and holding off on the gym or a long hike until the surface has settled.

Healing timeline & good to know

Healing timeline

Day 1–3
Keep the original dressing on as instructed. Wash gently with mild soap, pat dry, apply a thin layer of moisturiser.
Day 4–14
Expect peeling and itching — don't pick or scratch. Keep it out of the sun, sea and pool.
Day 14–30
Skin looks healed but is still settling underneath. Keep applying sunscreen once it's fully closed.

Good to know

  • Wash your hands before touching a healing tattoo.
  • Use a fragrance-free, alcohol-free moisturiser — nothing scented or exfoliating.
  • Wear loose clothing over the area so nothing rubs against it.
  • Redness, warmth or pus that gets worse after day 3 means you should see a doctor.
